How to quote CNC milling jobs

A CNC milling quote adds up material, machine time, setup and finishing, then applies your margin and quantity breaks. The inputs below are the ones that move the price most. SeekMake applies them automatically to every uploaded file.

In milling, machine time usually dominates, and it depends on how much material comes off, how many setups the part needs and how tight the tolerances are. Material cost comes from the blank size, not the finished part, so a mostly hollow part is still priced on a large block. Setup and programming weigh heavily on one-off parts and spread out as the quantity grows.

How it works

A simple quoting formula

FAQ

Questions shops ask before switching

What is the biggest cost driver?

Usually material and machine time. Setup matters most on small batches.

How do I set quantity breaks?

Spread setup over the batch and lower the unit price at the quantities your customers order most.

Can I automate this?

Yes. Enter your rates in SeekMake and every uploaded file is priced with the same rules.

How do tolerances affect a milling quote?

Tighter tolerances usually mean slower finishing passes, more inspection and sometimes extra setups, so they add machine and labour time. Many shops add a surcharge for a tighter tolerance class, which you can offer as an option in the widget.

Should I charge for programming on one-off milled parts?

Many shops include CAM programming in the setup cost, which is why a single part costs much more per piece than a batch. With quantity breaks, that fixed cost is spread across the order automatically.

Which files can customers upload?

STEP and STL files. The part is checked and measured automatically when it is uploaded.

How much does SeekMake cost?

There is a free plan to start. Paid plans add more features, lower fees on online orders and priority support.
